THE HOLLOW #01
Commissioned Work
As part of 'GODS OF LATMOS’
Video installation by Ali Mahmut Demirel
Commissioned original sound design by Daniela Huerta
Presented at Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden and at the Türkiye Pavilion of the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, 2025
'Gods of Latmos’ is conceived as a multidisciplinary investigation by Ali Demirel into the rock formations and prehistoric rock paintings of the Latmos Mountains and their relationship to recent mining activities in the area. Building upon the foundation laid by Demirel’s previous project Iwakura, which examined revered rocks in Japanese Shinto mythology, the series aims to reinvigorate humanity’s connection with nature by integrating modern scientific and technological perspectives with ancestral wisdom.
The first iteration of Gods of Latmos was commissioned by Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden in Germany for the exhibition Sea & Fog, curated by Çağla Ilk, Misal Adnan Yıldız, and Sandeep Sodhi (08.11.2024–26.01.2025). Two photo prints—showing the Balıktaş Cave Paintings and the Karakaya Open-pit Mining Field—were presented side-by-side alongside The Hollow audio-video installation.
The project is currently on view at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, in the Türkiye Pavilion GROUNDED/YEREBASAN, curated by Ceren Erdem and Bilge Kalfa (10.05–23.11.2025). The sound design for the installation was created by Daniela Huerta.
